What Fundación Gador prize is and how it works


The Fundación Gador Prize, which was instituted in 1999, is intended as an award to the experimental or clinical scientific work, with the purpose of contributing to the development of biomedical research - especially but not exclusively - in the area of Pharmacology.

The Prize is awarded on a biennial basis, in the odd-numbered years, on the occasion of the Annual Scientific Meeting of Sociedad Argentina de Investigación Clínica (SAIC), at prime time, usually in a public award ceremony of other Prizes, during Closing Dinner.

The SAIC is a society founded in 1960; it has been recognized for the dissemination of the scientific spirit in the medicine area. It has also been appointed by the original promoters of Fundación Gador Prize to administrate and present it. This Prize is open to those qualified as medical doctors, biochemists, biologists or equivalent up to 35 years old. Each work can be signed by one or more authors. Research works from authors that are members of SAIC’s Executive Committee may not be submitted, neither works fostered by Gador S.A. or by its staff or those accomplished by members of the jury or under their direction.

The topic of investigation is rotative and it is associated with some of the thematic areas defined by SAIC (endocrinology and reproduction, metabolism, immunology, neurosciences, oncology, etc.). This topic is agreed upon with Fundación Gador every 2 years.

Who are eligible to participate, how the jury is composed and how the winner is selected


To apply, the authors should submit, in writing, an original research work - extended mode - that should not have been published previously in national or foreign scientific journals.

The call for applicants and the announcement of the topic area will be handled by the SAIC, along with the announcements of the corresponding Annual Scientific Meeting. The SAIC receives and shares with Fundación Gador the submissions evaluated and selected by an ad hoc jury.

The jury will be made up of at least 3 members acknowledged by their peers as reference researchers in the corresponding area, one of them appointed by Fundación Gador. Those members of the jury responsible for evaluating the frame of the works according to the rules, will finally witness the oral presentation and will decide independently on the award-winning work.

To this effect, scores will be assigned to originality, posing of hypotheses, experimental design, statistical treatment, interpretation, discussion on findings and written and oral presentation of same.

Summaries of the submitted works, adjusted according to the instructions for authors, will be published in the journal Medicina (Buenos Aires).

Works in the areas of Endocrinology and Reproduction, Neurosciences, Oncology, Renal and Cardiovascular Systems, Genetics, Molecular Biomedicine and Immunology, were awarded during the nine editions of Fundación Gador Prize, between 1999 and 2015 (see link), and the winning researchers represented prestigious research institutions of CONICET (with base in Facultades de Medicina (Universidad de Buenos Aires), de Cuyo, de La Plata, Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica y de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (Universidad de Buenos Aires), Instituto de Investigaciones Bioquímicas Leloir, Instituto de Biología y Medicina Experimental) and other institutions such as Academia Nacional de Medicina; Fundación Cáncer; Instituto Fleming and Hospital Interzonal de Agudos de San Martín. The team of authors of each selected work received a sum of money, a diploma and an allusive statuette.
